What is a Smartwatch?
A smartwatch is a watch-shaped wearable computer; modern smartwatches provide a local touchscreen interface for daily use, while an associated smartphone app provides management and telemetry such as long-term bio-monitoring. Now let us find out what are the pros and cons of owning one..
Pros
- Never miss a call anymore. If you’re the type of person who is constantly on the go, missing a phone call can be a regular occurrence to you. You might not be able to hear your phone ring when you’re outside as the surrounding is noisy. A smartwatch’s vibration is audible and can notify you when you receive a call or text. Furthermore, by simply looking at the watch, you can quickly decide whether or not to respond!
- Lead a healthy lifestyle. Smartwatches can be used as a fitness tracker, recording a person’s steps, heart rate, calories burned, and so on. Previously, athletes had to carry their phones with them while running, which was inconvenient, or they carried a pouch and put their phones in it. Now, it is easier as your hands are free and you can check your progress by just looking at your wrist.
- New watch faces every single day! If you wear a regular watch, seeing the same dial every day can become monotonous. On the other hand, smartwatches allow you to change the dial/watch face every day. It will allow you to match the watch face to your mood and preference, in addition to being stylish. Not only that, you can change the watch face to your own pictures which is great as it will feel unique!
- Smartwatches are a form of payment as well. Because there is a disease, the government is encouraging the public to use their smart devices to make cashless payments. So, with the help of a smartwatches, users can now simply use their watch to conduct transactions. This way it can reduce the amount of physical contact between people. They only need to sync their smartwatch with their phone payment card and they are ready to go!
Now, let’s move over to the cons
Cons
- Size of the screen. 1 not so nice thing about smartwatches is that everything is displayed in a small space. When you want to use your apps, you have to make sure you are pressing the correct apps as it takes extra effort, especially if you have big fingers, Watching videos and movies on a smartwatch may not be as visually pleasing compare to doing the smart on a smartphone, PC or tablet.
- Limited Battery Life. This is definitely one of the main disadvantages as typically, it can only be used for 1 to 2 days after a full charge. Some don’t even last for 1 day. If you forgot to charge it, you’ll end up having a dead watch the next day. Additionally, you won’t be able to use some features such as tracking your sleep if your watch is dead while you’re sleeping.
- Your phone has to be close by. Unless your smartwatch has the cellular capability which cost more or you can connect to a WI-FI network, you have to be within the Bluetooth range of your smartphone to use the apps. 1 limitation of Bluetooth technology is that the primary device has to be within 300 feet of the secondary device. That means your phone has to be in your pocket, bag, in the room or somewhere nearby.
- The price. Smartwatches can be quite expensive. The more affordable ones are prices no less than $100 whereas some high-end models can cost up to $600. If you’re on a tight budget, you may be contemplating if buying a smartwatch is really worth it, or it’s better to just stick to your smartphone.
